Northern California Series

For the past month or so, I’ve been working on a collaboration with my brother, Justin Pyatt.  He lives in an amazingly beautiful area of Northern California, north of San Francisco, not very far from wine country.  Justin frequently sends me photos from these epic mountain bike rides that he goes on all the time.  Well, I decided to start painting landscapes from his reference photos, and I’ll be continuing this series for awhile…I’m enjoying the landscape and the color palette, plus I think there is much for me to learn from these hills!  Thank you, Justin – you’re an amazing photographer, and these paintings would not exist without you!

The following paintings represent my work over the past month, and are available except where noted.

Round Pond in Autumn, Berkshires, Mini Study 1

Buy with PayPal

Oil on 4″x4″ canvas panel board.  $18.00

We were very lucky to stay in a beautiful cabin overlooking this lovely, peaceful pond over Columbus Day weekend.  The colors were gorgeous, and even when the sky clouded over, the changes in lighting made the colorful landscape that much more interesting!  I had a great time painting on-site, and I’m continuing to explore this abstract-leaning autumnal theme now that I’m back home in my studio.

Clouds over a Fall Landscape, Mini Study

Oil on 4″x4″ canvas panel board.  $18.00

On our drive out to the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts last week, the cloud formations were incredible.  The scene in this mini painting is inspired by those clouds and the fall landscape that we are so lucky to experience this time of year.  I’m thinking about using this as a study for a larger painting sometime down the road.

Sadness and Hope of a Weeping Willow

Oil on 6″x6″ canvas panel board.  $40.00

There is so much emotion wrapped up in weeping willow trees.  I’ve written about childhood memories of our old backyard willow tree.  Those are nice memories that take me to a happy place.  But there’s also an obvious inherent sadness to the weeping willow.  With all of the tragedies happening in our country these last few weeks, I’ve been finding comfort in painting these trees.  There is sadness, as the willow branches appear to “weep,” but there’s also hope in the bits of light that filter through the leaves and branches.

Storm Coming Up At Dusk

Buy with PayPal

Oil on 6″x8″ gessoboard.  $40.00

When I can get a moment to watch the clouds at dusk, I usually see something that stays with me.  In this case, there had been thunderstorms moving through the area all afternoon, and we were about to get another one.  The building cloud formations coupled with the pink sky at dusk were an incredible sight, and cast interesting tones of light and darkness over the trees.
