Weather Happening, Study I.  Oil on 8″x8″ canvas panel board.  (Available at Daily Paintworks, starting bid $55.00)

I grew up in Northwestern Illinois, and I will always have images of “weather happening” stuck in my head.  In elementary school, tornado drills were as normal as fire drills.  At our house, it wasn’t unusual to go hang out in the basement for a bit “just in case.”  Painting storm clouds is a way for me to get some of these images out of my head.

Winter Sunsets, Mini Study I.  Oil on 4″x4″ gessoboard (Available at Daily Paintworks, starting bid: $15.00)

A great sunset offers a magical infusion of color to the cold, monotone months of winter.  These color studies were inspired by a dramatic winter sunset over Lake Quannapowitt, as captured by talented photographer Greg Anderson.  Please check out Greg’s stunning photography on instagram, @gregandy2

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice.  8″x8″ oil on canvas panel board.  (Not for sale)

Back in December, I realized that I had been so focused on my Northern California series that I hadn’t painted any wintertime landscapes.  I started to feel guilty about that, so on December 21, I painted this dark and chilly scene in honor of the Winter Solstice.

Northern California Series

For the past month or so, I’ve been working on a collaboration with my brother, Justin Pyatt.  He lives in an amazingly beautiful area of Northern California, north of San Francisco, not very far from wine country.  Justin frequently sends me photos from these epic mountain bike rides that he goes on all the time.  Well, I decided to start painting landscapes from his reference photos, and I’ll be continuing this series for awhile…I’m enjoying the landscape and the color palette, plus I think there is much for me to learn from these hills!  Thank you, Justin – you’re an amazing photographer, and these paintings would not exist without you!

The following paintings represent my work over the past month, and are available except where noted.
